The purpose of the licentiate program is to help the student become acquainted with the whole corpus of church law, understand it in terms of its theological, philosophical, and historical background, and learn the method and practice of scientific research.

Degrees

To earn the Licentiate in Canon Law (J.C.L.), students are required to complete six semesters in which the governing norms of the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ Church are studied; a thesis is written, and a comprehensive examination taken on the canons of the Code.

The course of studies normally is as follows:

  • CL 701: History of Canon Law
  • CL 731: Sacramental Law 
  • CL 715: American Law for Canonists
